Sorry for the lack of updates lately. I'll be getting some film back from the lab this week so check back for a new post and work is ongoing on our feature, still.

I just wanted to post a link to our friend Chris Hewitt's blog. Chris is a talented photographer and artist who about a year ago sold her belongings, packed her camera gear and paintings into a van she named Gertie, and embarked on a journey that took her from Toronto through the United States and now in British Columbia. Over that year I have loved reading her blog where she has so greatly described her adventures, the people she has met, the places she has been in such a wonderfully free-spirited and inspiring way. Recently Chris went through the not so happy adventure of having her beloved van go up in flames containing everything she had been traveling with including her DSLR camera and lenses, laptop, and the irreplaceable artwork she has created over the years. Chris is asking those who can for donations which can be sent HERE

Here is a link to her blog called ME, VAN, BIKE. It is definitely worth checking out and a great way to pass some time online, at work, over breakfast etc etc. It will not disappoint. =) We love you Chris and wish you all the best!

This week UPS finally delivered a camera that Ryan won on Ebay. An awesome Krasnogorsk-3 (K-3) super 16mm film camera!! Made even more awesome by the fact that it's a PL mount, perfect for our LOMO anamorphics. Now we'll be able to shoot anamorphic 16mm!! Looks like all the film I've been saving in our fridge will finally come in handy. =)

So, we have begun some initial planning of our first feature film. The ideas have been floating around for a while but we now find ourselves more determined than ever to finally make one of our own. If all goes well shooting will begin in September. That said, we are still in the early stages and trying to conquer the beast that is casting. If there are any visitors to our blog out there, 20 something in age, living in Toronto and who dig our style, we are still looking for the right person to be the male lead in our somewhat abstract film. Feel free to comment on this post and we can give you more info. Thanks in advance!

For the next while much of the posting here will probably have to do with the progress of our film. But we promise to include all the pretty and wonderful photos and videos that we can. Hope you enjoy.

GH13 AVCHD hack tests with anamorphics...

first test using an increased bitrate in the AVCHD mode;

shot with the Tester 13 firmware hack and LOMO anamorphic lenses mounted with the Hot Rod PL adapter and a Class 6 Panasonic SD card.

patch settings:
-Native 24p
-Video bitrate adjustment - 40000000
-Overall bitrate adjustment - 46000000
-Limiting bitrate adjustment - 50000000

shutterspeed was all 1/50, ISO was all 100.
bitrates seemed to peak at around 32Mbps.
no color correction done.

GH13 Native 2x Anamorphic Tests

I finally got a chance to install the new modified firmware for the GH1. So far I have left the AVC mode alone because I really wanted to try out the MJPEG on-camera squeeze mode with my LOMO anamorphic lenses.

So I made my MJPEG frame 2560x720(3.56:1 aspect, which is 2x 1.78:1) this mode stretches the image by 2x but when you shoot with a 2x anamorphic lens, it cancels the effect out and you get a non squeezed 3.56:1 clip.. this can then be easily cropped in post to a perfect 1920x720 2.67:1 aspect ratio.. AMAZING! Unfortunately though this hack is just blowing up the image from 720P somehow and so it's not really all that sharp.. but still really neat!

Here are some comparison still grabs of the new MJPEG hack vs. my old anamorphic work flow (AVCHD squeezed and cropped to 1440x54)

We recently entered The Reel Challenge, a video contest in Canada where we had to make a short film about the importance of creator's rights and copyright protection. While sadly we did not win, we thought we'd post our efforts here since (I think) we still managed to make a pretty decent short.

a little piece shot on the weekend to test out my new 35mm and 80mm Lomo anamorphic square front lenses. LOVE the image, the barrel distortion on the 35 is lovely and the bokeh on the 80 is incredible!

So I recently acquired a Holga 120SF camera but hadn't been too inspired to take many photos with it in the cold and snow. Until that is, Ryan ever so amazingly gave me a polaroid back for Christmas. It looks pretty ridiculous and renders the fairly terrible viewfinder even more terrible but it is super fun and I think the characteristic look of Holga shots lend themselves to instant film nicely. Here is the first couple of shots as well as my goofy looking camera.

so i had been messing around with the panasonic anamorphic adapter for a while, but it was really soft and hard to work with and doesn't produce the oval OOF areas which are one of the greatest things about anamorphic photography. since the iscorama lenses are now selling instantly for thousands of dollars and i wanted to get a handheld rig and rod adapter anyway, i decided to buy up an old (1973, for maximum artifacty weirdness) lomo square front and the Hot Rod PL adapter.

east coast road trip. Krista's photos. part 2.

My last batch of photos from our trip out East in August. It ended with 4 great days in PEI. The weather was amazing: lots of sun, lots of swimming, lots of jellyfish. It was sad to leave but nothing was sadder then our car breaking down in a little place called Cabano, Quebec. I kept myself entertained by documenting this stretch of the trip but really I just couldn't wait to get home, (despite the chain-smoking, electric-bike riding shirtless French man we befriended). It was a long and exhausting trip home and our little apartment met us with open arms.

ROAD TRIP!
